GNWATCH

What is the Neighborhood Watch Program?

The GNW Watch is a group of residents who volunteer their time to serve as a conduit of information between the residents on their individual street or block, and the staff of the Great Northwest.

In one way, Block Captains can provide information to Great Northwest Security about problems neighbors are experiencing on the street, and in return, the Block Captain can provide his or her neighbors with information about trends and problem areas received from GNW Security and information learned at the meetings held each month.

At the meetings members frequently listen to a guest speaker from the San Antonio Police Department or other agencies focusing on informative things to help making life in the Great Northwest a safer, more enjoyable experience.  We frequently have members of the City Council Staff attend, and this is an opportunity to ask questions of them.

Most importantly, the meetings give Block Captains and interested residents an opportunity to meet with residents from all around the GNW in a pleasant and friendly setting so everyone can better understand the environment we live in.  And, we always have refreshments!

Who Can Be A Block Captain?

Anyone can be a Block Captain andyou can have as many Block Captains on your street as it takes to be that conduit of information.  It takes very little time and the meetings are held monthly, on the last Wednesday of the month at 6:30 PM. The biggest reward for Block Captains is the knowledge that their efforts have helped prevent crime in the Great Northwest. It's a lot of fun too!

Do I have to be a Block Captain to attend the GNWatch Meetings?

No.  If you are a member of the Great Northwest, we encourage you to attend our monthly meetings.  But fair warning, you may very well make the decision to become a Block Captain by the time you leave!

Who should I contact if I need more information?

Contact Chief Burton at secchief@greatnorthwest.org or GNWatch Coordinator Patrick Yourg at Cven76@yahoo.com

Visit the City's web site and fill out an on-line report.

Help End Auto Theft

H.E.A.T. is a statewide vehicle registration program administered by the Texas Department of Public Safety that helps law enforcement officials identify stolen vehicles.

Any vehicle owner in Texas can obtain decals for his/her car or truck that authorizes law enforcement officers to stop the vehicle and verify ownership, between 1:00 a.m. and 5:00 a.m., anywhere in Texas, or if the vehicle is crossing over into Mexico.

Just complete the H.E.A.T. registration application to have your vehicle entered in a statewide database, accessible by law enforcement agencies, 24 hours a day. Personal and company vehicles are eligible for H.E.A.T. registration. You don't have to be a permanent Texas resident to participate in the program as long as you can provide a Texas address and phone number.

Got Questions? Call the Texas H.E.A.T. Program toll-free at 1-888-447-5933 or visit the F.A.Q.

GRAFFITI REMOVER "WRITE OFF"

Northwest Neighborhoods Against Crime is a 501c3 organization staffed totally

by citizen volunteers. The group assists San Antonio Police Department in preventing, deterring, and detecting criminal activities by providing financial, administrative, and educational support for Cellular on Patrol, Community Policing, and other crime prevention programs.

NWNAC has a limited supply of 24-ounce bottles of Write Off, a graffiti remover, available for purchase for $30 per bottle. (This product is not available to the public "off the shelf.") We all work hard to keep our neighborhoods attractive. Graffiti can quickly undermine those efforts. A speedy and effective removal is a great deterrent and discourages more tagging.

Household cleaners can damage some surfaces; for example, they can destroy the reflective nature of road (traffic) signs such as stop signs and thus make the sign difficult or impossible to see at night. Write Off is a product that will not harm road (traffic) signs and is recommended for graffiti removal by SAPD. Write Off is only available through qualified vendors. If you have any questions or would like to purchase a bottle, please call Judy at 698-2388.
