T-BALL and Coach Pitch

Registration for
T-Ball and Coach Pitch

Registration for both T-Ball and Coach Pitch will begin May 2nd and run thru May 15th. Contact the Recreation Director Mark Zoller at 210-681-2983 for more details or visit the Lodge on Timberwilde to fill out an application for your child to play in this season. Registration is limited based upon the number of coaches, so why not volunteer to help coach a team or be an assistant? Parental support is a big part of making the GNW Sports program the success that it is today!

T-Ball is the entry level to the game of baseball and softball for young players, usually five to seven years old. Members of two teams take turns hitting a ball off a batting tee set on home plate. Batters try to get on base and advance to home; fielders try to prevent that from happening. The elimination of pitching allows children to participate without the fear of being hit by a pitched ball. Tee ball develops the primary baseball skills of hitting, running, fielding and throwing. The players gain an understanding of the fundamental rules of baseball. And since score is not kept, there are no losers in T-Ball, only winners!

The Coach-Pitch division is a step up from the T-Ball level of play; it introduces players to actual pitching. There are major differences at this level that separates it from T-Ball. Essentially, the game is played with regulation rules with a couple of notable differences. Instead of players pitching, coaches pitch. This gives children the opportunity to learn to hit a pitched ball without fear of being hit. Balls and strikes are not called, however a player may strike out swinging. The focus of Coach-Pitch is to learn the fundamentals of the game in a format that stresses learning the physical skills necessary to advance to the next level of play, Single-A.

Why is that Red Flag Flying
on the Silver Creek Soccer Fields?

Those of you who participate in our sports programs year after year know that when the red flag is flying, it means that the fields are not open for playing upon. This primarily happens right after a big rain storm when the fields are wet and the turf would be damaged by the players (such as during soccer season) if the fields were used at that time. There are two flags in use, and sometimes only one will be up if only that area is affected. Flag #1 is at Silver Creek complex near the volleyball courts, affecting the front corner field where the younger soccer crowd plays. Flag #2 is behind the Silver Creek tennis and basketball courts by the baseball diamond. When Flag #2 is up, as it was on Saturday, April 30th when the thunderstorm chased everyone off the field, it means that the soccer fields are closed and there will be no practice or games allowed that day.
